Weekend Recap

Posted September 21, 2011 at 7:23 pm F1600 Series, F2000 Championship, Star Mazda Comments

F1600 Championship Series

Bill Valet used his home-track knowledge of Lime Rock Park to win his second race of the 2011 F1600 Formula F Championship season in Round Seven. Valet nipped Art Foster by .318 seconds at the stripe, but both Valet and Foster were an afterthought when the checkered flag waved. All eyes were on Colin Thompson who drove from dead last to third. Drive of the weekend? I think so. Well, maybe not …

In Round 8, Foster proved his season-best finish of second during the first race of the weekend wasn’t a fluke. Similar to Valet, Foster was at home on the Lime Rock Park circuit — a course he considers his home track. Ryan Leach was second, 0.372 seconds astray and Thompson piloted his way to another third-place result.

Honorable mention should go to Jim Goughary who qualified on pole for both races at LRP.

The F1600 drivers conclude their season on Oct. 14-16 at Watkins Glen International.

F2000 Championship Series

Championship leader Remy Audette earned his fifth win of the 2011 F2000 Championship Series season on Saturday at Lime Rock Park. He basically put on a clinic after surviving a Turn 1 incident on the opening lap of the weekend’s first race, winning by 14.285 seconds over Tim Minor. Angel Benitez scored a podium finish in the 28-lap race — his first of the season.

Did I say Colin Thompson had the drive of the weekend?  Yes, I think I did. Those watching the F2000 Championship race might argue, though. Minor — who was involved in the aforementioned first turn clash — drove from last to second. His performance might steal the honor, you be the judge.

Current runner-up in the championship, Chris Livengood was bumped from competition (following the T1 incident) in the weekend’s first race. Having lost so many points to Audette — with championship hopes seemingly gone — some would bow out. Not Livengood.

He rebounded to win Round 12 — starting from off-pole to Audette — stretching his lead over the Canadian to 5.610 seconds. Audette maintained an 88 point lead by finishing second, while Tim Paul capped off his best race of the year, finishing third.

Star Mazda

No one could touch Connor De Phillippi at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Sunday as the talented pilot drove to a 1.671-second lead after starting from pole position. He was plain fast.

While De Phillippi was fast, Vautier was consistent. The Frenchman seized the 2011 Star Mazda Championship with a fifth-place result in the Series’ season-finale. Vautier never finished outside the top-five this season; logging four wins, four pole positions, four fast laps and six podiums driving for three-time champs JDC MotorSports. Vautier was Mr. Consistent in the No. 5 machine.

De Phillippi’s teammate Nick Andries finished second, his fourth runner-up result of the season. A win isn’t far off. The impressive combination of De Phillippi and Andries helped earn Team Pelfrey the team championship. De Phillippi concluded the season second overall with Andries third in the drivers’ standings.

Zach Veach finished an exemplary third Sunday in his second-ever Star Mazda race. Patrick McKenna made a solid return to the championship with a fourth-place result.

Tristan Vautier holds on at Infineon

After securing the pole position in front of the IndyCar paddock at Infineon Raceway during Saturday’s Star Mazda qualifying session, Tristan Vautier knew exactly what he needed to do in the race: hold onto the lead.

And that’s exactly what he did. The 22-year-old championship leader built a gap large enough to survive a late-race charge by Connor De Phillippi, winning Round 9 of the 2011 Star Mazda Championship in Sonoma, Calif.

Vautier notched the pole position with a track record, touring Infineon in 1:28.516 on the Indy layout. The fast lap marked his fourth pole of the season. The previous Star Mazda record of 1:28.719 was set on the full-course configuration by Pablo Donoso in 2005.

Vautier, De Phillippi split at GP3R

Tristan Vautier made the most of his pole-position start on the grid in the first Star Mazda race of the weekend at Trois-Rivieres, winning Round 7 by 0.820 seconds.

The victory marked the 21-year-old’s second win of the season after starting from pole (the first came at Barber Motorsports Park) and elevated his overall lead in the championship standings. JV Horto finished runner-up in Race 1, earning his third-consecutive podium finish.

Nick Andries rounded out the podium with a third-place result trailing by 1.254 seconds at the stripe. Sage Karam and Connor De Phillippi finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

With starting positions for Round 8 set by the fast laps from Race 1, Vautier found himself starting from the point again on Sunday. For the majority of the race it appeared Vautier would repeat as the race winner, sweeping the competition at Trois-Rivieres.

Vautier led the first 30 laps despite being trailed closely by Andries early in the race. On Lap 21, Andries’ teammate Connor De Phillippi moved into second place, bumping Andries back to third.

With his eyes set on Vautier, De Phillippi continued to close the gap on the front runner continually improving his lap times. On Lap 25, De Phillippi set the fastest lap of the race narrowing the deficit to just 1.863 seconds.

On Lap 31, De Phillippi made his move bumping Vautier to his first runner-up status of the weekend. Andries continued to improve his lap times as well, moving under the rear wing of Vautier’s JDC MotorSport’s No. 5 machine.

Just four laps after De Phillippi took the point, Andries bumped Vautier to third place for  a Team Pelfrey 1-2 with eight laps remaining.

Meanwhile, farther back in the field, Americans Sage Karam and Gustavo Menezes passed fifth-place runner Joao Jardim for fifth and sixth-place, respectively. Karam would end the race in fifth after moving up from the rear of the field following a drive-through penalty, capping off an impressive drive. Horto finished fourth, narrowly missing a fourth-consecutive podium finish.

The checkered flag waved on Lap 43 with De Phillippi winning his third race of the 2011 season. Andries held the runner-up spot with Vautier earning his second podium of the weekend.

Weekend Recap

Skip Barber NationalRoad Atlanta

Scott Anderson finished the weekend in Road Atlanta right where he started: First. The talented 22-year-old set the fastest lap in Round 9 qualifying and went on to sweep the weekend, winning both Round 9 and 10 while extending his overall championship lead. Brandon Newey was runner-up in the weekend’s first race with Sebastian Ordonez rounding out the top-three. In Round 10, Trent Hindman was second with Shelby Blackstock rounding out the podium after starting seventh.

F2000 Championship Series – Mosport

Kyle Connery picked up ten points on championship leader Remy Audette by winning his fourth race of the 2011 season Friday, July 22, at Mosport. It was his second-consecutive win in the series. On Saturday, however, Audette returned the favor by winning his fourth race of the year while extending his championship lead to 104 points (w/out drops). The victory marked Audette’s second-career win at Mosport. Chris Livengood, who sits second in the F2000 Championship standings, finished runner-up both days.

Star Mazda – Mosport

J.V. Horto secured his first-career Star Mazda win in Round 6 of the 2011 championship Sunday after starting fifth at Mosport. The victory also marked the first win of the 2011 season for Juncos Racing — the team which won the ’10 title. Connor De Phillippi finished second and Tatiana Calderon rounded out the top-three for her second-career podium finish. De Phillippi’s runner-up result bumped him into second-place in the drivers’ standings, just six points behind leader Tristan Vautier.

Indy Lights – Edmonton

Sam Schmidt Motorsports has Edmonton figured out. During the first of the Twin 100′s at Edmonton’s City Centre Airport circuit, Esteban Guerrieri piloted his No. 7 SSM entry to victory with a flawless performance. He was trailed closely by teammate and championship leader Josef Newgarden throughout the timed event. Newgarden drove to victory Sunday, edging Toronto winner Stefan Wilson at the stripe. The win — Newgarden’s fourth of the year — elevated his lead in the championship to 63 points. Victor Carbone had a bit of a break-through weekend, challenging for a podium finish both days. Series’ rookie Oliver Webb put in an impressive performance for Jensen MotorSport finishing fifth and third, respectively, in his debut.

Karam drives away from field at Iowa Speedway

Posted June 26, 2011 at 5:37 pm Star Mazda Comments

Sage Karam felt his tires come up to temperature on his second qualifying lap Saturday at Iowa Speedway.

The car felt good, real good. So good, in fact, that he nearly broke the track record, missing it by a mere 0.065 seconds on his second trip around the 0.875-mile high-banked oval.

In order to be fast in a Star Mazda car at Iowa, a driver needs to be flat out and on the opening lap of the 100-lap Star Mazda race, Karam was flat-out fast.

But, so was Martin Scuncio who started on the outside of the front row after qualifying second.

“We raced each other clean,” Karam said of his early wheel-to-wheel battle with Scuncio. “We got a little close, but he raced me clean. [Andretti Autosport] set my car up to come in pretty quick, so I was flat right off the bat.”

The two stayed side-by-side for the opening four laps until Scuncio drifted a bit wide at the exit of Turn 4 and tagged the outside wall with his right-rear tire. Still, Scuncio was able to continue and hold onto second position. The mistake was costly, however, as Karam quickly built a gap on Scuncio and the rest of the field.

When the checkered flag waved, Karam crossed the stripe with a 7.837-second advantage. It was the second-consecutive victory for the 16-year-old phenom — who become the youngest driver to win a Star Mazda race on June 19 at Milwaukee (He was 16-years and 101-days old at the time). The previous record was held by current IndyCar driver Graham Rahal.

On Lap 21, Karam had extended his advantage to 2.5 seconds. Then on Lap 46, Scuncio was forced to pit as an oil-line came loose ending his day. A yellow flag bunched up the field, but only temporarily. J.V. Horto replaced teammate Scuncio in the runner-up spot as the field took the green flag for a restart on Lap 50.

Karam developed a slight understeer, but still managed to build another gap as the rest of the field seemed to be battling the same issue.

“The tires came up pretty good, but started to fall off a little bit about Lap 50 or 60,” Karam recalled post-race. “We started getting an understeer and that’s when I went full soft with the bar. I had one click in towards soft and after that I just kept clicking it until I got to full soft.”

Horto continued to push hard chasing Karam and tagged the wall lightly at the exit of Turn 4 on Lap 53, leaving a black streak along the exterior wall only a few feet from where Scuncio had touched during the opening laps.

“I was able to get a good start and get into the draft,” Horto said. “[Iowa] a big track and it’s a tough course to pass on. My lap times fell off about 2 or 3/10s during the race as we started picking up some understeer.”

As Karam continued to lead the way, Horto began to feel the pressure from Tristan Vautier, Gustavo Menezes and Connor De Phillippi with about 33 laps remaining. Those four would continue to fight for position as the laps wound down.

With 10 to go, championship leader Vautier dove to the inside of Turn 1 attempting to overtake Horto for the runner-up position. The attempt failed and relegated Vautier back to fourth as Menezes advanced to third.

“That pass was a lot of fun,” Menezes said with a smile in his post-race interview. “I was pretty excited when I got around [Vautier]. Luckily when we got through traffic I was able to get into a good position and duck underneath him. I got a good draft and went inside. At that point, I was able to pull a gap and work on catching J.V. [Horto].”

With just five laps to go, Connor De Phillippi became the next race casualty pulling into pit lane after his right-rear tire went down. He was running fifth at the time.

De Phillippi’s misfortune elevated Tatiana Calderon into fifth position. On Thursday, Calderon suffered a big crash during open testing. The incident had her team (Juncos Racing) turning wrenches for 42 hours straight as the squad pulled an all-nighter Thursday working to prepare all four team cars. Calderon offered a reward for the hard work by rebounding to qualify seventh and ultimately securing a top-five finish.

Juncos also had reason to celebrate with Horto finishing in the runner-up position after starting fourth and Menezes finishing third after starting back in sixth place. The final result marked Menezes’ first-career podium finish. The up-and-coming rookie flew to Hungary on Sunday to prepare for his next race in the Formula Renault 2.0 series.

“I’m leaving for the Hungaroring tomorrow,” he commented Saturday. “I’m running six races in Europe. I’ve done two races already and it’s helped me transition [to Star Mazda] a little quicker. There are 45 cars in the Renault series and there isn’t a blocking rule, so everyone’s really aggressive. You have to work your butt off there. I feel really good driving both cars and I think driving the 2.0 cars will really help me in the Star Mazda Championship on the road courses. I’m happy with how everything is going this year. My confidence is boosting pretty quick.”

Vautier, driving for JDC MotorSports, held on for fourth in the race, maintaining his championship lead by eight points. Karam’s win bumped him to second in the point standings, just six marks above De Phillippi who resides in third.

The Star Mazda drivers will return to road-course action on July 21-23 at Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Canada.

Karam secures first career Star Mazda pole

Posted June 25, 2011 at 4:16 pm Star Mazda Comments

A week after winning his first career Star Mazda race, Sage Karam secured his first career pole position in the series with a two-lap average speed of 146.304 mph. His second lap was clocked at 21.998 seconds, just 0.065 seconds shy of the track record at Iowa Speedway set by last year’s champion Conor Daly.

“I knew the car was good,” Karam said. “I knew that if I was able to keep it flat, it should be enough. The first lap was good and on the second lap I could really feel the tires come up to temperature. I just kept telling myself, ‘keep it flat, keep it flat.’”

Martin Scuncio finished second in the session with a best lap of 22.076, averaging 145.787 mph. Tristan Vautier was third quick with an average speed just shy of Scuncio, clocking 145.734 mph.

“The car was great,” Scuncio said. “I think we were a little slower than yesterday due to the wind, but the track felt good despite all the rain today. The grip level was perfect, so I don’t think we’ll make any changes heading into the race. It’s all about securing points.”

J.V. Horto and Connor De Phillippi rounded out the top-five, respectively. The only incident of note during the session occurred just past midway when Nick Andries spun during entry into Turn 3. The rear of the car impacted the outside wall on Andries’ first qualifying lap. He will start today’s race from the rear of the field. At this time, it’s unknown whether the team will make repairs to the No. 81 car or use the Team Pelfrey backup machine.

The Star Mazda drivers are tentatively scheduled to take the green flag for Round 5 at 4:15 p.m. today.

Newton Bound

Posted June 24, 2011 at 5:45 am Indy Lights, Star Mazda Comments

Good morning. I’m moments away from departing for Newton, Ia. I should arrive at Iowa Speedway in time for today’s first Star Mazda practice at 10 a.m. and Indy Lights follow.

Make sure to follow @JOWT on Twitter this weekend and check back here for updates today and tomorrow.

I apologize for the lack of updates during the last couple weeks. I promise there was a good reason for my absence: I’m officially married.

While I was away, the Mazda Road to Indy gathered at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wisc. Here’s a quick recap for those who missed it.

USF2000 National Championship

I’m not sure if Wayne Boyd was inspired by fellow Irishman Rory Mcllroy’s historic performance at the U.S. Open, or if it was something else entirely. Either way, the native of Northern Ireland earned his first career USF2000 victory this past weekend in Milwaukee.

Boyd took the lead on the opening lap and never looked back despite being challenged by pole sitter Zach Veach throughout the 50-lap race. Veach trailed by 0.304 seconds at the checkered flag. The win was also a first for Boyd’s team Belardi Auto Racing.

Boyd was the fifth different winner in six USF2000 races this season. Juan Piedrahita secured his second-consecutive podium with a third-place finish after starting from the tail of the field following a qualifying incident.  Luke Ellery — Piedrahita’s teammate at JDC MotorSports — was fourth, while championship leader Petri Suvanto rounded out the top five. Click here for full results.

Star Mazda Championship

A name very familiar to those of us who follow junior formula racing echoed out of the loud speakers in Milwaukee Sunday night.

Sage Karam, the 2010 USF2000 National Champion, earned his first Star Mazda victory in just his fourth career start. He led all but five laps aboard his No. 88 Andretti Autosport entry Sunday, cruising to the checkered 13.43 seconds ahead of runner-up finisher Martin Scuncio. Karam started third and Scuncio took the green flag in seventh.

Karam, who showcased his speed right-off-the bat by setting the quick time in Thursday’s open practice, set the fastest lap of the race (27.763 seconds). Sunday’s victory marked Karam’s second-consecutive podium finish.

Nick Andries finished third after an impressive weekend which saw him top the time charts in the first official practice and set the pace during qualifying for his first-career pole position.

Frenchman Tristan Vautier — who leads the championship — finished the 98-lap event fourth while rookie Gustavo Menezes claimed his first career top-five finish. Click here for full results.

Indy Lights

It might not have been a very exciting race for the fans, but it sure was fun for Esteban Guerrieri.

The 26-year-old locked down his first career Indy Lights win from pole position Sunday at the David Hobbs 100, despite starting from the point two other times this season (St. Petersburg and Long Beach).

Guerrieri led all 100 laps en route to a 5.5102-second margin of victory over his Sam Schmidt Motorsports’ teammate Josef Newgarden. The final tally marked the fourth time in five races that SSM has had a 1-2 finish. The lone exception was Barber Motorsports Park.

Jorge Goncalvez put together a solid drive to secure the third and final podium spot after starting the race seventh. Perhaps more impressive is the fact that Goncalvez landed his first career podium after suffering one of the most violent wrecks in recent memory at the Freedom 100 in Indianapolis a mere three weeks ago.

Bryan Clauson edged Gustavo Yacaman for fourth on Lap 87. Only eight cars were running when the checkered flag waved.

Newgarden, the only repeat winner this season, continues to lead the championship battle heading to Iowa Speedway this weekend.

I’ll be on site reporting from Iowa this weekend, so make sure to check back and follow JOWT on Twitter.
