News and views on drivers chasing open wheel stardom

AIM Autosport is extremely pleased with their late entry into the Star Mazda Championship with 17 year old John Edwards. Edwards missed the first round of the championship held at Sebring International Raceway. He didn’t let a late start hamper his efforts though, he took the pole position and victory at Miller Motorsports Park in Salt Lake City’s round 2. Edwards continued his winning ways, by claiming four(official) victories in 2008. Richard Kent technically won Saturday’s race at Laguna Seca but was not entered in the points championship, so Edwards was credited with the win (marking his 5th). He also qualified on pole, four times this season on his way to the 2008 title.

John has quite an extensive resume, which all began in karting. In 2003, he won the Great Lakes Sprint Series Junior Briggs Championship. The Junior Briggs class, with relatively low horsepower, helped the youngster develop smoothness and taught him to keep up his mid corner momentum….which later translated quite nicely to his car efforts. Later that year, Edwards became the youngest driver to hold an open wheel license in the United States. As if that wasn’t enough, John went on to win a Skip Barber Formula Dodge race in the first part of 2004. The victory was a historic moment as the former karting champion became the youngest open wheel race winner. John followed up that win with another victory in pouring rain the very next day, proving his skill exceeded the experience of the other pilots in the field. He won by a 25 second margin, over Atle Gulbrandsen, 25, from Norway.

That weekend in January 2004 would change John Michael Edwards’ life. He was now a racing prospect at all levels across the globe. Red Bull chose Edwards to be the next American F1 driver awarding him with the prestigious Red Bull Driver Search scholarship. Since that time John has lived in six different cities and three countries. He moved to Europe late in 2004, where Red Bull decided to put him back in a go kart for further development. In 2005, John was placed in a Formula Renault 2.0 car, running 23 races in the Formula Renault 2.0 Germany and Eurocup series. He continued his FR development in 2006, running in the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC and Eurocup series, running 27 races. He only managed one victory in those two seasons, but proved to be very quick. In 2007, he made his way back to the United States running 12 races in the Atlantic Championship with Forsythe Racing, finishing on the podium in one race.

By this time John was running out of funding and needed to take a close look at his future in open wheel racing. He made a tough decision in 2008, one that no aspiring race driver wants to make; he decided to take a step backwards in the motorsports ladder in order to continue his efforts and stay sharp. That decision turned out to be one of the best of his career. Edwards won the 2008 Star Mazda title yesterday, by finishing second in the series finale held at Laguna Seca raceway. The title holder in the 2008 Star Mazda championship will be awarded a fully funded ride in the Atlantic Championship for 2009. The award is made possible by the MazdaSPEED Development Ladder. John will begin testing with several teams in the coming weeks, before making a final commitment for 2009.

Conor Daly: Climbing the Ladder

Posted October 8, 2008 at 8:36 pm 2008 Championship, Skip Barber Comments

Conor Daly doesn’t want to be known as the son of a great race car driver, Conor Daly wants to be a great race car driver. The 16 year old, (dare I mention it?)son of former IndyCar and Formula One great Derek Daly, is taking the right steps to achieve his goal.

Under the guidance of his father, Conor tested and raced more cars this year than just about any other junior formula driver worldwide. Here are just a few of the cars and series that Conor used to gain additional seat-time in for 2008.

Apparently his vast amount of seat-time paid off in the long run. Conor and fellow Skip Barber National competitor, Josef Newgarden were selected for the Team USA scholarship. The duo will be racing in the Formula Ford Festival as well as the Walter Hayes Trophy this fall. As if winning the scholarship weren’t enough, Conor went on to win the 2008 Skip Barber National Championship (by a small margin over Newgarden) in the series finale at Virginia International Raceway last weekend.

Winning the 2008 Skip Barber National Championship is quite an accomplishment. The championship is widely known as a developmental series where some of the best kart racers and aspiring race car drivers make the transition to the world of racing cars. For a little insight into the world of Skip Barber racing or just a ride along at Road America; click here. The competition this year was steep as usual, with drivers competing for the 2008 title and the opportunity to reach the next rung of the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Ladder. Conor Daly finished inside the top two in both races over the weekend in the series finale, giving him access to the next rung: he received the big prize… $350,000, which is to be used for a Star Mazda program in 2009. The ladder system continues for the Star Mazda Champion, who will be placed in the Atlantic Championship. Daly is currently following in the footsteps of American driver Joel Miller who was a top kart racer in the direct drive ICA category, before winning the Skip Barber National Championship in 2007. This year Joel can be found competing for the 2008 Star Mazda championship, which concludes this weekend at Laguna Seca. Miller currently leads the overall points championship. Mazda has really stepped up, providing these young aspiring drivers with a way to progress and develop into seasoned race car drivers. It’s nice to see the ladder system working.

Congrats to the 2008 Skip Barber National Champion: Conor Daly, we look forward to seeing you in a Star Mazda car for 2009.

Finninsh driver Markus Niemela did everything right on Friday afternoon in Braselton, Georgia; driving for Brookes Associates Racing. The 24 year old rookie not only won the race, he claimed the 2008 drivers championship, solidifying his title as Rookie of the Year. The former GP2 driver has had a very solid year in America with five podiums, Friday’s victory was Markus’s second consecutive win. He is the first Finnish driver to win the overall championship and the second rookie to win the title. Simon Pagenaud of France also won the title as a rookie in 2006 driving for Team Australia. John Brookes of Brookes Associates Racing is extremely pleased with the result as Niemela’s driving created a historical moment for the team, this is their first Atlantic title.

American drivers Jonathan Bomarito and Jonathan Summerton didn’t fare quite as well. Heading into the series finale at Road Atlanta, Bomarito held a eight point lead over Summerton in the championship tally, Niemela actually sat in third. Unfortunately, both American drivers failed to finish the final race on Friday afternoon. Bomarito, driving for Mathiasen Motorsports, had a mechanical failure that prevented him from crossing the stripe more than 10 times, while Summerton ended up pushing just a bit too hard in an effort to catch Niemela on Friday. Both drivers faced a DNF, ending their hopes of a Championship title in 2008. It should be noted that both drivers had a very successful season. Bomarito claimed 3 victories this year which was a rarity as the series saw seven different winners in 2008. Summerton was in contention all year long and actually had the Rookie of the Year points lead heading into the finale. The Kissimmee, Florida resident had two victories this year driving for Newman-Wachs Racing.

The F2000 Championship concluded it’s 2008 season over the weekend on Thunderbolt Raceway at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Anders Krohn proved to be the rightful owner of the coveted F2000 Championship Title by winning both days (Rounds 13 & 14). Heading into the final race weekend, three drivers were battling for the 2nd spot in the championship: JDC Motorsport’s Chris Miller, Anderson Racing’s Jonny Baker, and Brian Graham Racing’s Kyle Marcelli. Miller had a tough weekend and finished outside of the top ten for the first time all season in Round 14. It was a bitter ending for the young pilot who has done so well in his inaugural season of car racing. Jonny Baker and Kyle Marcelli on the other hand did exactly what they needed to do; finish in the top three both days. Marcelli led Baker across the stripe in Round 13 while Baker returned the favor and led Marcelli across the stripe in Round 14. The duo trailed Anderson Racing hotshoe and series champion Anders Krohn both days.

The duo managed to sit tied in the Western Division points battle after Final #2 on Sunday, but the tie breaker went to Vincec as he had won previously in the Race of Americas Final #1.
