Jack Hawksworth will graduate to Indy Lights in 2013 with powerhouse Sam Schmidt Motorsports.
The 21-year-old British driver makes the move to Indy Lights — the top-development step of the Mazda Road to Indy — after a dominant season in Star Mazda. Hawksworth, a McLaren AUTOSPORT Young Driver of the Year finalist, finished his first year in North America with 12 podium finishes, including eight victories in Star Mazda.
This is both a good signing for SSM and a good move for Hawksworth who will look to follow in the footsteps of 2011 Star Mazda and 2012 Indy Lights title winner Tristan Vautier. It was announced this week that Vautier — who drove for SSM in Indy Lights — will test an IndyCar with the team Thursday at Sebring International Raceway.
Watch for another solid season from Hawksworth as he adapts to the Indy Lights machine and continues his ascent of the Mazda Road to Indy development ladder.
