The Star Mazda Championship will not be run in 2013 under the current ownership, Series’ president Gary Rodrigues announced today.

It has unfortunately not been possible to secure sufficient support to keep the current program going. The assets of the Series are being offered to qualified buyers at market price, in the hope that a company or group will be able to marshal the resources to continue this groundbreaking program for many years to come.

Read the full statement from Star Mazda president Gary Rodrigues here.

Update: While no one has been named officially, it has been confirmed that several buyers are in the mix for 2013 — with one leading the chase. Stay tuned for more as the story develops.

More to come.

    Um…what?

So, the question would be, who would be a potential new owner? Don Panoz has a bunch of cash he didn’t have a couple of months ago, right? Randy Bernard probably got a big settlement from IndyCar. Powerball winner, maybe?

In all seriousness, what a shame. Hope the Mazdas can be run by SOMEBODY next year. It’s a pivotal part of the ladder system.
