When Alon Day and Belardi Auto Racing amicably parted ways following Indy Lights qualifying at Iowa Speedway last weekend, team owner Brian Belardi knew exactly who he wanted to fill the No. 9 seat.
The team announced this morning that the Irishman will join Belardi Auto Racing for the remainder of the 2012 Indy Lights season. He will make his debut next weekend on the streets of Toronto.
“Peter has been on our radar since he was a competitor at Andretti Autosport last year,” Belardi said in a team release. “We saw how immensely talented and quick he was, and mentally put him into consideration for the future. At the beginning of this season we had two great drivers fill our two full-time seats, so things just weren’t right at the time.
“Unfortunately this season has not worked out the way we had anticipated. With Peter now on our team, we expect this to be a step in the right direction. Everyone is looking forward to his first race with us in Toronto.”
Dempsey made his Indy Lights debut in 2011 with O2 Racing Technology and Andretti Autosport. In 2012, the 26-year-old has made two starts (Indianapolis and Belle Isle) driving for Younessi Racing. With five races remaining on the 2012 calendar, Dempsey will be looking to make a splash as he pursues a future IndyCar ride.
This is a solid signing for Belardi Auto Racing and a good opportunity for Dempsey to put his burgeoning career back on track. Dempsey is a talented driver who deserves an opportunity to race at the highest level of open-wheel racing.
