Heading into the Skip Barber Winter Series finale at Sebring International Raceway, Jake Eidson led Danilo Estrela by two points.
The championship was up for grabs and both drivers wanted it.
Estrela found victory in the opening race. Eidson was second, trailing by a mere 0.134 seconds. The championship would come down to the finale; a fitting end to a season-long hard-fought battle of the Es.
Only the battle fizzled out early.
Estrela led the opening laps in the finale — battling back-and-forth with Eidson — before retiring with a broken left-rear lower control arm. Eidson cruised to victory edging rookie Nick Neri by 5.909 seconds. Front runner Jack Mitchell Jr. was third. Estrela was classified ninth.
Eidson secured the championship with the win and his stellar performance late in the season; he won three of the final four races. While most — Eidson included — would have liked to see the championship come down to a last-lap battle between the two championship leaders, it wasn’t to be. Nonetheless, it was a great battle while it lasted.
