Esteban Guerrieri made it official yesterday afternoon, announcing he will return for his sophomore season with Sam Schmidt Motorsports in the 2012 Indy Lights championship.
It’s nice to see the 27-year-old driver return for a second shot at the Indy Lights crown. Last season, 2011, Guerrieri was pegged by many to claim the overall championship and he had the opportunity to do so. Yet, it wasn’t to be. Instead, it was his teammate American Josef Newgarden who stole the show.
Unforced errors cost the Argentina native in 2011 and resulted in a second-place result in the championship. His speed was evident, though.
Guerrieri finished his rookie campaign with six pole positions, three race wins and led 261 laps in 10 starts. Not bad.
If he’s able to finish each race and add some consistency to his rookie performance, he could, indeed, win the 2012 crown. Time will tell.
