Twenty-one Star Mazda drivers and 16 Indy Lights drivers wrapped up a two-day spring training test Tuesday afternoon on the 2.38-mile Barber Motorsports Park race circuit, located on the eastern edge of Birmingham, Ala.
Connor De Phillippi topped the Star Mazda competition for the second-straight afternoon and nearly found his way into the 1:19-range, producing a time of 1:20.076 during the morning session. While his lap time easily broke the previous record, it won’t stand in the official record books because it wasn’t produced during an official qualifying session or race.
Petri Suvanto was the only other Star Mazda pilot to crack the 1:21 barrier, touring the circuit in 1:20.712.
On the Indy Lights side, Sebastian Saavedra topped the speed charts as the lone driver to best the 1:17 mark (1:16.7046). Victor Carbone (1:17.0544) was second quick with Gustavo Yacaman setting the third-fastest time of the day (1:17.4259). Yesterday’s chart topper, Tristan Vautier, could only muster enough speed for fifth during today’s test, but remained the fastest rookie driver on course.
