Ashley Freiberg has confirmed a full-time ride in the 2012 Star Mazda Championship with defending champs JDC MotorSports.

The program was put in place as part of TrueCar’s “Women Empowered Initiative.”

The 20-year-old driver will join teammate Juan Piedrahita in JDC’s Star Mazda camp. Previously, Freiberg has competed in four Star Mazda events. Her best finish came in late July, 2010, when she finished fifth at Autobahn Country Club. She started the race ninth.

Two weeks prior, the Illinois native won her first Skip Barber National race at New Jersey Motorsports Park. By fall Freiberg had captured 11 wins in the Skip Barber Summer Series en route to the overall championship.

It will be nice to see her run the full 18-race Star Mazda schedule in 2012. Watch for good results as she further adapts to the Star Mazda car and her new team.
