It was a good weekend to start from the runner-up spot in Skip Barber National Championship competition.

Trent Hindman found victory lane in Round 13 after starting second and Sebastian Ordonez did the same on Sunday in Round 14 at Autobahn County Club in Joliet, Illinois.

Ordonez started from pole on Saturday and led Hindman and Scott Anderson in a heated three-car battle during the first race of the weekend, but couldn’t shake the mechanical gremlins that have haunted him all season. With just three laps remaining, Oronez was forced to retire, pulling off track in Turn 11.

A lap earlier, however, Hindman was able to complete a pass for the lead. Once in front he was able to hold on, finishing 4.323 seconds ahead of Anderson. Brandon Newey was third after starting sixth, 17.711 seconds astray after the 17-lap race was complete. Hindman was the lone driver to crack the one minute 34-second barrier, putting together a 1:33.918 second lap en route to his third win of the 2011 season.

On Sunday, in Round 14, Ordonez was determined to claw his way back to the front. It didn’t take him long.

Ordonez was able to pick off Hindman early to take the lead and, from there, build a sizeable advantage over the rest of the field. Midway through the race, Ordonez developed a five-second lead over Hindman, while Anderson and Shelby Blackstock battled to catch the leaders and the final podium spot.

Despite repeated attempts — which resulted in some contact — Blackstock was unable to find his way past Anderson for third. After 14 laps were completed, it was Ordonez earning his second-career Skip Barber National win with Hindman in second and Series’ points leader Anderson rounding out the top-three.

On slick tires, Ordonez was the only driver to break the one minute 31 second mark, touring the Illinois circuit in 1:30.590.

The Skip Barber National competitors return to the track for the final rounds of the 2011 season on Oct. 6-8 at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut.
