Eleven drivers were named candidates for the inaugural Team Canada Scholarship; a program that will award one driver a funded opportunity to travel to Europe and compete in the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch this fall.
The original list was whittled down to just three drivers today.
- Michael Adams, 16, OFFC
- Nathan Blok, 17, Formula Tour 1600
- Xavier Coupal, 20, Formula Tour 1600
In addition to narrowing the candidates, a panel of judges were also named this afternoon. The six-person panel will include Ron Fellows, Norris McDonald, Kyle Marcelli, Alan Craighead, Ian Willis and Brian Graham.
It’s always difficult to narrow down such a talented list and I’m sure this particular reduction was no exception. No doubt, some very talented drivers didn’t make the cut.
The finalists will be interviewed by the panel of judges at Mosport International Raceway on Monday, Aug. 29. Coupal has the age advantage which could potentially help him in the interview process. Blok is currently competing in his third season of Formula Ford competition …so he has the on-track experience… plus he’s a black belt in Karate so the judges should be worried if he’s not picked. Adams has shown a ton of potential and is probably the obvious pick given his family’s racing history and lack of overall funds to move up the ladder, but his age (16) could deter the judges. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Who’s your pick? Who do you feel would be the best candidate to represent Canada at the Formula Ford Festival?
