Gustavo Yacaman knew he would need to push the car hard with such an early draw (he was the second driver on track) in today’s qualifying session for the Indy Lights Sukup 100 at Iowa Speedway.

And he did, in fact, push the car hard. He piloted the No. 2 Team Moore entry to P1 and it stayed in that position for the majority of the session.

It appeared his two-lap average of 159.520 would hold. Still, he and Team Moore patiently awaited Esteban Guerrieri’s attempt — the fastest driver during this morning’s practice.

It didn’t take long to realize the temporary pole was gone. Guerrieri not only stole the pole, he stole the show, dominating the entire field with a two-lap average of 160.787 mph, lapping 1.267 miles per hour quicker than Yacaman. It was the fourth pole position of the year for Guerrieri. Yacaman would remain P2, however, marking a career-best starting position.

“I’m pretty happy,” Yacaman said. “The draw we got was really, really early and the track was very dirty from the [USAC] Silver Crown cars. I had tons of understeer but I managed to move my bars and my weight jacker around enough to get a decent lap in.

“This is my first time on the front row in three years,” he continued. “It took me three years to get here, but here we are.”

After winning last weekend in Milwaukee, Guerrieri will look to carry his momentum into Saturday’s Sukup 100.

“The difficult thing is not to get there, but to stay there,” Guerrieri said of his front-row starting spot. “It was difficult to get used to the track. [Iowa] is a lot different than Milwaukee. You can really feel the G-forces pushing you toward the outside wall and the [driving] line is very important.  The car felt good, so I just tried to maximize my two qualifying laps.”
