Twelve Indy Lights rookies passed their oval test Tuesday at Chicagoland Speedway in preparation for the upcoming Freedom 100 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 27.

Drivers who successfully completed the test and earned their licenses are: Rusty Mitchell-Team E; Josef Newgarden-Sam Schmidt Motorsports; Victor Garcia-Team Moore; Duarte Ferreira-Bryan Herta Autosport; Jorge Goncalvez-Belardi Auto Racing; Juan Pablo Garcia-Jensen MotorSport; Esteban Guerrieri-SSM; Bryan Clauson-SSM; David Ostella-Jensen MotorSport; Victor Carbone-SSM; Anders Krohn-BAR; and Chase Austin (has yet to sign). Gustavo Yacaman also took part in the test day for some additional laps.

The drivers compiled more than 2,700 miles during the one-day test on the 1.5-mile Illinois oval.

Thank you for the update. The one name on the list that surprises me is Chase Austin. Is he truly interested in coming to INDYCAR? That may be good for something for a while. (For those who don’t know, Chase Austin, if he indeed races Indy, would be the first African-American driver at Indy since George Mack.)

No Peter Dempsey? Or did they decide his Star Mazda experience was enough? And I don’t remember James Winslow racing on an oval in his previous Lights or Atlantics outings.

James Winslow was confirmed previously. Peter Dempsey was not in attendance Tuesday, but he and teammate Mikael Grenier plan to test at IMS tomorrow.
