Tristan Vautier has signed with JDC MotorSports for the upcoming 2011 Star Mazda Championship.

Last season, as a rookie, the Frenchman finished fifth in the drivers’ championship with two wins (Sebring and NJMP), three podiums and nine top-10 finishes while driving for Andersen Racing.

This is a good signing for JDC. The talented 21-year-old Vautier will look to win the championship in 2011 and if he gels with the team — which I’m sure he will — that goal is anything but out of reach. I was very impressed by Tristan last year so I have relatively high expectations for 2011.

Ryan – dare to pick a top 5 in this series?

RTI — It’s going to be an interesting season. I will say that much. The talent level is already high with only 11 drivers committed for a full season.

There are still several talented drivers working on contracts for 2011, so it might be a bit early to make any picks.

    Who are your favorites?

Ryan – I will leave picking the favorites up to the experts like you. But my personal opinion is any of the following could win the title. I know it’s a weak opinion but there are so many guys that can win and I consider the key figures.

Horto: veteran with age and experience on his side and a great team. Not much guessing going on under this tent.Daly’s tub and engine won’t hurt either.

De Phillipi: maturity and a series repeater will be big here. Conservative driver with ability to win championships by maximizing points on every weekend. Has been to every track on schedule, including Barber. Baltimore is new.

Karam: sponsor machine and fast and talented but also very young. Exciting and fun to watch.New team to the series but capable. No team mate to share data could hurt.

Vautier: was always a threat in 2010 and will be legit shoe-in for the title this year. Unsure if JDC is the best team for him, but they are respectable and I think the budget was accommodating at JDC.A solid racing background and proven performer.

McKenna: Will win races this year.Appeared consistent in F2000 last year.Dont know much about what kind of support surrounds this driver.Hard to find info.

Scuncio:showed great speed in qualifying and racing at Road Atlanta last year in his only S Mazda event.Impressive background but unsure if he is consistent enough to battle for a title by looking at last year’s results.

RTI — You bring up some very good points. Picking a favorite is always tough and every year there’s usually at least one surprise.

    Thanks for posting.
