Colin Thompson, 16, will pilot a Honda-powered Swift DB6 in the 2011 F1600 Formula F Championship Series.

The Pennsylvania native recently committed to running a family-owned car in the newly-formed championship series. Thompson’s background is centered around oval racing — with experience in quarter midgets and micro sprints — but he also has some karting and road course experience.

Last season, at age 15, he became the youngest entrant in the ultra-competitive Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup. He finished 19th in the year-end points championship, logging a best finish of 11th at Road America in Round 7. He finished ninth among rookies and scored a 12th-place finish in just his second start at Virginia International Raceway.

He has good potential, so it will be fun watching his progress this season as he adapts to a F1600 car.

Take a ride with Colin Thompson as he laps a Skip Barber car around the Sebring short course after the jump.

Boy, the car hated that mid-corner downshift on the entry to Sunset Bend on the second lap, huh? Great catch, though, and great video.
