Brian Graham Racing Team Grote has stepped up in a big way.

The squad has created an award that will send one of the top Canadian drivers overseas next fall to compete in the ultra-competitive Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch. The program is similar to the Team USA Scholarship – founded by journalist Jeremy Shaw.

At the end of the 2011 season, a young driver from the Ontario Formula Ford Championship or the Quebec-based Formula Tour 1600 series will be selected to participate in the FFF. The ride will be funded by BGR/TG.

A list will be whittled down throughout the 2011 season — by team principals Brian Graham, Gerry Merz and Dave Matkovich. A select group of finalists will be invited to a shoot-out to determine the ultimate winner and FFF entrant this fall. The winning driver will be selected by a panel of judges and named as the inaugural Team Canada Scholarship winner.

This is a tremendous program for young up-and-coming Canadian drivers — particularly those who are just making the move from karts to cars. It’s nice to see a team step up to the plate and offer so much. This bodes extremely well for the future success of Canadian drivers.
