A press release — containing information that might as well have been announced months ago, given the lack-of-secrecy — was sent out today by Andretti Autosport stating that the team will (as anticipated) field Sage Karam in the 2011 Star Mazda Championship.

Karam, 15, won the 2010 USF2000 National Championship while driving for Andretti Autosport. The Nazareth, Pa., native scored nine wins, 11 pole positions and 11 podiums in 12 starts.  As part of his championship prize, Karam was awarded a $350,000 scholarship from MazdaSPEED to graduate up to the next rung in the “Road to Indy” ladder: Star Mazda.

It’s great to see Andretti Autosport expanding their development program into the Star Mazda ranks for 2011; especially with such a talented driver. The team will now field an entry at every level of the Road to Indy: USF2000 National Championship, Star Mazda Championship, Indy Lights and IndyCar.

I’m super stoked about this! Sage is a strong talent, and I think we all knew that he would be in the Star Mazda Championship with someone. I’m really happy that its with Andretti given how strong the connection is between Karam and the Andrettis. Also, as you say, its also fantastic to see a team being involved at every level of the Road to Indy program! Andretti has really set the bar high for the other teams in terms of developing young America open-wheel talent.
