USAC Drivers to Indy Lights

USAC drivers will now have the opportunity to feed into the “Road to Indy,” thanks to a new scholarship program set up by IndyCar.

The program – which was officially announced earlier today – will allow the driver who scores the most points in all three of USAC’s series (Sprints, Midgets and Silver Crown) to complete a fully-funded 2011 Indy Lights oval schedule. The scholarship is limited exclusively to oval events.

The partnership between USAC and the IRL was originally mentioned Tuesday evening on Autosport Radio by IZOD IndyCar Series CEO Randy Bernard. During the interview, Bernard noted that he is working on a similar scholarship for Star Mazda competitors, in the Road to Indy program, but discussions are still in the preliminary stage.

The battle for the inaugural USAC/Indy Lights scholarship is still up for grabs with Bryan Clauson leading the way. Clauson holds a 22-point lead over Levi Jones heading into the final month of competition.

I will post additional updates as they become available. The hosting Firestone Indy Lights team hasn’t been announced at this time.

Maybe the winner of the Star Championship could get a full season in midgets! That would be a complete education. :)

    Indeed.
