I was in Rock Island, Ill., all weekend covering the RIGP so this story is a bit late but it’s still big news. Pippa Mann became the second woman in history to win an Indy Lights race on Saturday at Kentucky Speedway. Ana Beatriz — who won at Nashville and Iowa — was the first.
Two weeks ago, at Infineon Raceway, Mann scored her first top-five finish by crossing the stripe fifth. Then, last week, she started the Chicagoland 100 from pole position and led most of the race before being nipped by Canadian James Hinchcliffe at the line. It was the third closest finish in Indy Lights history. This past weekend, starting from pole in Kentucky, she wouldn’t be denied. She won.
Hinchcliffe, who stole the show in Chicagoland, finished runner-up trailing Mann by 6.8327 seconds at the start/finish line. Championship leader, J.K. Vernay, finished third earning his tenth top-five finish of the season.
Gustavo Yacaman put in the drive of the day to earn “hard charger honors.” Yacaman started the race 13th and finished fifth after the 67-lap race was complete.
Adrian Campos Jr. continued to showcase his improvement by setting the fastest lap of the day (190.408 mph). In other news, Daniel Herrington replaced Sebastian Saavedra who walked away from his Indy Lights career over the weekend.
Complete results are posted after the jump.
