Sorry for the lack of “live” updates today.  It was a busy day at the track with drivers battling ominous weather on all sides (literally).  I have no idea how the USF2000 and Star Mazda competitors made it through their final practice without encountering a single rain drop.

I spent the bulk of the afternoon talking with drivers and racing contacts.  It was nice to meet so many people today. Tomorrow will be much busier with all three of the ‘Road to Indy’ series competing.  The Indy Lights’ competitors will be a step behind the rest.  They weren’t able to log any track time today – Lights’ practice was cancelled after the Speedway helicopter was unable to land due to the area storms.

JDC Motorsport’s Raphael Abbate topped the first session of the day in USF2000 competition. The Andretti Autosport duo of Zach Veach and Sage Karam topped the final two session of the evening.

Karam set the fastest lap of the day with a 24.051- after changing the powerplant in the #8 car.  Veach followed closely behind with a 24.136.  The two ran very close together throughout the entire final session in order to get-a-feel for how the car reacts in traffic.  Ironically, both drivers set their fast laps while running alone. Patrick McKenna was third quick with a 24.180 in the final session. All three drivers were very enthusiastic when asked about their experience (so far) at Iowa Speedway.

Full Results from the final session.

Star Mazda

In Star Mazda, Anders Krohn, Joao Horto and Conor Daly topped the time charts. Daly set the fastest lap of the day with a 22.156.  “The car was really good today,” said Daly. “The race will be interesting, I think it’s going to take lap traffic or a mistake to overtake for the lead here. Fortunately, I had the chance to drive in traffic with a few of the fast guys.”

Star Mazda Results – Iowa

Tomorrow should be a lot of fun with both qualifying and racing set to take place for all the junior formula series. Stay tuned for updates throughout the day here and on Twitter.

In the meantime, here are a few photos for your viewing pleasure…
