Dean Smith was awarded the 2009 McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver award, which consists of a McLaren F1 test, £50,000 prize money, full BRDC membership, a TW Steel watch, and Puma racewear.  The award was presented last night at the Autosport Awards Banquet in London.

Smith, 21, was previously nominated for the award in 2007 after finishing 2nd in the 2007 Formula Renault 2.0 UK Championship.  By winning the award this year, he becomes the first driver to win the award after being previously nominated.

This season, Smith won the Formula Renault UK championship claiming 7 wins, 15 podiums, and 7 pole positions.  His average finish this season was 2.94… which, by itself, is pretty impressive.

After winning the 2005 Formula BMW UK Championship, Smith has been stationary in the Formula Renault 2.0 UK Championship, despite several successful seasons.  Hopefully, this award will help him take the next step.

The 21-year-old race driver plans to run in GP3 for 2010, but is reportedly considering British F3 as well.
