The Star Mazda Championship released their 2009 Awards yesterday via this press release.

The 2009 Driver Awards are as follows:

  • 2009 Star Mazda Champion: Adam Christodoulou
  • “Clutch Performer Award”: Rusty Mitchell
  • Hard Charger Award: Toshihiro Deki
  • Most Improved Award: Caio Lara

I think the awards are pretty solid.  I’m not sure I’d go with Toshihiro Deki for the “hard charger” though?  It’s probably a fairly safe assumption that Deki earned the award for passing cars that were off-the-track (DNF’s) rather than those that were on track.  Regardless, he was persistent this year and it paid off.

The official press release explains the hard charger title as this…

The driver who gains the most places in total (13-Rounds) from the beginning to end of the races.

According to my count, which excludes both races at Joliet (due to my ‘Live Blog’), the following drivers earned at least two hard charger awards this season.  Just for fun, I listed the positions improved in parenthesis.

  • Conor Daly– Sebring (13), Laguna Seca (11)
  • Michael Furfari– Milwaukee Mile (10), Iowa Speedway (13)
  • Anders Krohn– Virginia International Raceway (9), Mosport (8)
  • Denis Navarro– Miller Motorsports Park (9), Road Atlanta (7)
