Sean Guthrie Returns to Indy Lights…

Sean Guthrie has signed with Andersen Racing, to compete in the Firestone Indy Lights season finale after being “suspended indefinitely” by the league earlier this season for an on-track incident at Kansas Speedway.

I received the press release, about Sean’s return, early Saturday morning.  I’ve held off on posting the news, in case the IRL had any stipulations associated with the suspension lift.  I touched base with them earlier today to see if I could get an official statement.  I have yet to receive a response.

RacingWest.com offered this story, and provided a statement by Indy Lights race director, Tony Cotman;

“We have spoken with Sean and he has shown he has learned from his actions in Kansas.”

“I believe Sean is a good driver and welcome his return this weekend in Homestead. I wish him the best of luck.”

I’m not sure what to make of all this.  I find it strange that nothing has been posted on IndyCar.com about Sean’s return. Perhaps the story is still in the works.

When I first heard about the suspension back in late-April, I wrote;

Since neither Jim or Sean Guthrie had been previously suspended by the IRL, an indefinite suspension seemed a little extreme to me. One would assume that a multi-race suspension would have offered sufficient punishment for Sean’s on-track actions.

I stand by my statement, the suspension seemed a bit harsh at the time and it still does.  I’m glad the league is giving Sean a second shot.  Hopefully he has learned from his mistake and it won’t happen again.  On the flip side of this, it’s a bit odd that the league would take such a strong stand on Sean’s actions…. suspending him indefinitely… and then allow him to return during the same season.  I don’t think anyone expected that.

Regardless, I feel they are making the correct decision in giving the 21-year-old race driver a second chance.

The Firestone Indy Lights conclude their 2009 season this weekend at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
