2009 Robopong-200

The 2009 Robopong 200 is now complete.  Some of the biggest names in karting and open wheel racing joined the fun and competed in one of the most highly anticipated races of the year. The 200-lap event was held at New Castle Motorsports Park.

This year’s race was won by Vision Racings’ Ed Carpenter and Nathan O’ Rourke.  Comet Kart Sales’ Michael Busse and Ben Payne finished second.  Mason Madej and Bob Zirves of Team Atlas Concrete Lifting/MBM Racing put in the most remarkable drive by coming from last to claim the final spot on the podium.

Needless to say, my just-for-fun pre-event picks didn’t do as well in the race as they did in qualifying.  For those that missed it, I made “podium picks” heading into the event, which is probably one of the worst ideas I’ve ever come up with.  How can anyone accurately predict who will win a 200-lap go kart endurance race?   On a positive note, two of my top three picks qualified inside the top-five heading into the race.

My Podium Picks for 2009: (Actual Finishing Position in Parenthesis)

  1. Team DFR/Supertune USA- Bobby Wilson, Conor Daly (Actual:  22nd)
  2. ScreamingTalent/H Power/PBIR/Maranello- Spencer Pigot, Cody Jolly (Actual:  21st)
  3. Comet Racing Engines/Arrow Karts #11- Billy Lewis, CJ Linter (Actual:  9th)
