Jonathan Summerton

The Atlantic Championship just completed their penultimate event of the 2009 season at historic Road Atlanta.  The top three drivers in the overall points championship all found themselves on the podium.

Today’s tally will make the 2009 title chase even more interesting.  Make the jump for all the details….

Florida resident Jonathan Summerton did exactly what he needed to do in order to keep his championship hopes alive by qualifying on pole and leading every lap of today’s race.  Current championship leader, Simona De Silvestro finished second on the day, allowing her to maintain her points lead heading into the series finale at Laguna Seca.  John Edwards, who won the 2008 Star Mazda championship, finished the race in third just behind De Silvestro.

Jonathan Bomarito, who made his return to Atlantic competition this weekend as De Silvestro’s teammate, finished the race in fourth.  Markus Niemela, who won the 2008 Atlantic Championship, put in another consistent drive to round out the top-five.

Assuming my math is correct, the point standings (including a drop of the drivers worst finish to date) looks something like this…

  • Simona De Silvestro 172
  • Jonathan Summerton 166
  • John Edwards 161

Jonathan Summerton set the fastest lap of the race with a 1:15.563 on the final lap of the event.  The top-three drivers all managed to break into the 1:15’s.  The remainder of the field fell into the 1:16 category.

The hard charger award goes to James Winslow for improving two positions in today’s race.  Winslow started the race in 9th and finished 7th.

Greg Mansell, who returned to the series for this weekend’s event after running the majority of the season in Europe, failed to finish the race after his engine caught fire just past the halfway point of the 34-lap race.

The series returns to action on October 11th at Laguna Seca for the final event on the 2009 calendar.
