A disconnected alternator was all that stood in the way of a weekend sweep for Josef Newgarden at Brands Hatch in the MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain.
The 18-year-old American drove a fantastic race in Round-22, crossing the stripe ahead of championship points leader; James Cole. Unfortunately, as stated above, the tech officials excluded Newgarden from the final results due to the forementioned rules violation. The Joe Tandy Racing crew immediately filed an appeal.
In the second race of the weekend, Round-23, Newgarden drove away from the field, winning the race by a 5.253 second margin. This would have been his tenth win of the season, had he not been DQ’d in Round-22. Instead, it marked his ninth win of the season and his 3rd (4th) at Brands Hatch.
The Tennessee native is currently 2nd in the overall points championship and 1st in the Rookie of the Year point standings. The series will conclude its 2009 championship at Castle Combe with Rounds 24 & 25 on October 3rd.
