Canadian driver Tyler Dueck was offered a last minute opportunity to travel to Monza, Italy for the opening round of the Italian Formula Renault Championship. Making the most of the opportunity, the 22-year-old driver took the win in Race 1, after starting fifth. He followed up Saturday’s victory with a fourth place finish on Sunday. His weekend results allowed him to leave Monza as the current championship points leader, holding a ten point advantage over second place driver Daniel Mancinelli. Dueck was driving for BVM Minardi. The opportunity to race was provided by the Intrepid Drivers Program, which is set-up to help top kart racers make the jump to car racing.

This was a truly impressive weekend from Dueck and it would be a shame to see him sit-out the rest of the championship due to funding issues. Dueck has always been very impressive in karts and it looks like a second season of competition in the Italian Formula Renault championship may just be what he needs to prove his worth in cars. Last year, driving for Cram Competition, the Canadian pilot focused on developing his craft in the Italian Formula Renault championship. His best finish in 2008 was 12th after starting 18th at the Hungaroring, which just goes to show you, how impressive his run at Monza was last weekend. Hopefully we will see him back in the car at Varano.
