Richard Kent of Clifton Reynes, England has signed with Andersen Racing to contest the 2009 Star Mazda championship. The 20-year-old driver has had his eyes on the Star Mazda series for quite some time now. Aiming to make his debut at Mosport last August, he suffered some mechanical issues during testing that prevented him from taking the green flag. Determined to make a series start in 2008, he returned to the United States for the Star Mazda series finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. His patience turned out to be a virtue, as he ended up winning his first race by 2.171 seconds over series’ champion John Edwards.

After spending 2007 in the Formula Palmer Audi series (where he finished seventh), Richard decided to take the bulk of 2008 off as he pursued funding. During this time he ran three relatively unsuccessful races in the UK Formula Renault 2.0 series, before heading to the United States where he completed a few tests with Andersen Racing in their Star Mazda car. He ended the season on a high note, as mentioned above, by winning the race in the series he truly wanted to be running. It will be interesting to see if the Kent will be able to carry his momentum over into the 2009 championship.
